Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor stated when questioned about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."

Newsom's time in office as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. But, he noted that any choice is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has come to the forefront as a notable opponent of the former president's team, leveraging his digital presence and championing a proposition that would expand the party's congressional seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a recent interview on a major news network. Duffy disclosed a strategy to cut government money from the state and warned eliminating the authority to provide CDLs.

"I'm about to pull a significant sum from the state," Duffy said, in the wake of a this week's fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused three deaths and four injuries.

Newsom's office pointed out that the national authorities had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to receive a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had before announced he was withholding $40m from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a recent comment responding to Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted poll revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom must consider running for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has risen to an typical level of 33.5% from previous levels, while his negative ratings has dropped from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.

In previous months, the governor remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his future for 2028.

He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
